NORSEWInD – Oldbaum and partners leading the way offshore

Wind speed data is key to all wind energy developments, but what happens when you are kilometres offshore with no real wind speed reference?

Through our work in DOWNVInD, a European consortium, and with partners in remote sensing, Oldbaum identified that it was possible to create a project on a large scale to develop wind atlases offshore using physical data as opposed to modelled data.

The result is NORSEWInD, coordinated by Oldbaum Services.

NORSEWInD is a ground-breaking project providing a dependable offshore wind atlas of the North, Irish and Baltic Seas. It is the product of four years of work under the coordination of Oldbaum Services and carried out by a consortium of 21 partners throughout Europe with a budget of €7.9 million Euros.

This data set is available at www.norsewind.eu along with a reliable GIS tool, modelled data and satellite derived wind atlases: the culmination of around 12 years of LiDAR data. This represents the largest single purpose wind LiDAR dataset in the industry worldwide.

This wind atlas is not only a map of wind resource but also a dataset that will provide added value to the wind industry. This includes annual long-term corrected mean wind speed, Weibull parameters (K&A), turbulence intensity, and wind shear - the alpha exponent.

Wind power forecasts are of utmost importance as input to various decision-making processes related to power systems operations and participation in electricity markets.
