Apprentices join Oldbaum

February 2015

The Oldbaum team is delighted to welcome two apprentices to our growing team.

Cassandra McIlwraith has been with us for a few months, having joined the team as Apprentice Administrator at the end of last year. Callum Scott will experience plenty of unpredictable weather as Apprentice Field Service Engineer, assisting with instrument commissioning/ maintenance/ monitoring/ decommissioning.

Both Cassandra and Callum live locally and are excited to be working in the renewable energy industry.

Re-Invest in India

February 2015

Re-Invest is India’s first Renewable Energy Global Investors Meet & Expo - and Oldbaum’s Technical Director Andy Oldroyd will speak at the event later this month.

He’ll be in good company in New Delhi as the event will be officially opened by India’s Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It's hoped that over 1000 delegates will attend from India and abroad, including investors, fund sponsors, financiers, advisors, lenders, banks, project developers and manufacturers.

Andy co-founded wind energy consultancy Oldbaum Services in 2005 and since then the company has delivered over 17GW of wind technical services on onshore and offshore projects worldwide. In 2013 Oldbaum was commissioned by the Indian Government’s Ministry of New and Renewable to carry out a study into the offshore wind potential of Tamil Nadu, on the southern tip of India.

At Re-Invest Andy will take part in a panel-discussion chaired by Secretary General of the Global Wind Energy Council Steve Sawyer. The discussion will be about Grid Connected Wind Power with a focus on offshore wind, and speakers will advise on how wind power development in India can be accelerated. On the panel with Andy will be Allan MacAskill from MacAskill Associates; Mr Huub Den Rooijen, Head of Offshore Wind at the Crown Estate; Norbert Giese from Senvion SE; Mark Leybourne from IT Power and Charles Yates of CmY Consultants Limited.

The Indian Government is aiming to add approximately 100,000MW from renewable sources in the next five years, offering huge investment. As the first major platform for investment promotion in the renewable sector at Government of India level, Re-Invest looks to be unmissable.

Speaking ahead of his trip to Asia Andy said: “Offshore wind in India is an extremely exciting new market and it’s an honour to be invited to speak at such a prestigious event.”

Re-Invest 2015 takes place from Sunday, February 15 to Tuesday, February 17. Andy’s panel-slot is on February 17 from 10am to 11.30am.

Oldbaum purchase Wind Iris LiDAR due to growing demand

 December 2014

After recent successful deployments in Denmark and Holland, Oldbaum has acquired a Wind Iris LiDAR system to add to the wind energy consultancy’s growing range of wind data instrumentation.

The Wind Iris, manufactured by Avent LiDAR Technology, is a flexible nacelle-based LiDAR used for measuring upstream wind speed. The instrument can deliver highly valuable information about the wind climate that the wind turbine experiences. This information can be used for studies such as wind turbine optimisation and post-wind farm construction noise assessment.

With the addition of the Wind Iris, Oldbaum is now able to offer all forms of LiDAR-based measurement for our clients as a data service. This includes nacelle-based, ground based, floating LiDAR, as well as scanning LiDAR.

Oldbaum’s independent approach allows the consultancy the freedom to offer a wide selection of LiDAR systems. These come from a multitude of manufacturers and are appropriately chosen by our technical team to match the client’s measurement requirements.

Team members set for EWEA Denmark

December 2014

Oldbaum Services are set to have excellent representation at the next EWEA Offshore conference & exhibition.

Three Oldbaum posters, and an oral presentation, have been confirmed for EWEA Offshore in Copenhagen in March 2015.

Technical Director Andy Oldroyd, who has become a very experienced presenter, will deliver a talk about Certification of scanning LiDAR using a practical example. A poster of Andy’s has also been approved for EWEA which will be on another topic: ‘Floating LiDAR – the how, why & when.’

Instrumentation Engineer Erik Brown will present his poster titled: ‘Yaw alignment study for two neighbouring turbines using nacelle mounted LiDAR’. And Oldbaum’s Scientist Alex Cassola shall demonstrate his experience through ‘The effect of the beam geometries of a nacelle mounted two-beam LiDAR on non-homogeneous wind field measurements.’

The European Wind Energy Association’s conference is the largest offshore wind energy conference & exhibition in the world. Its Danish setting next year is appropriate, as the country is home to the world’s first ever commercial wind farm in Vindeby.

Thousands of wind energy professionals will gather at EWEA at the Bella Center Copenhagen from March 10th to March 12th. Posters will be displayed in the poster venue of the conference hall on Wednesday, March 11th – the second day of the conference.
